Eyelid Surgery in Beverly Hills
The eyes express happiness or sadness, surprise, and excitement. They communicate and provide subtle hints to express moods during a conversation, but your eyes may tell another story that you would prefer not to share – the story of your age. The delicate soft tissue around the eyelids and their corners can age prematurely, making patients look older than their years. Board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Maher Anous offers eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) to restore a youthful appearance and ensure you look as energized as you feel.

With age and other factors that include repeated expressions, fatty tissue fluctuation, gravity, and sun exposure, the soft tissue around your eyes changes, droops, and can begin to look aged. Genetics may also predispose some patients to advanced aging around the eyes; patients considered too young to have eyelid bags, as well as mature patients, often complain of excess skin and fullness of the upper and lower eyelids.
A once bright, open, and, youthful appearance can make way for tissue that appears tired, droopy, and old. Many patients seek cosmetic eyelid rejuvenation from Dr. Anous after experiencing problems applying makeup, a heaviness of tissue surrounding the eyes, and difficulty with their peripheral vision due to drooping upper lids. The many benefits of a cosmetic eyelid life include:
- A rested and youthful appearance
- Natural results and eye shape
- Improved symmetry
- Stabilized support of lower eyelid and improved position
- Long-lasting results
- Improved vision
Dr. Anous takes a conservative approach when removing redundant skin to ensure proper eyelid closure after surgery.
Are You Qualified for Eyelid Surgery?
As blepharoplasty is not an extensive surgery, many patients are qualified for the procedure. Dr. Anous provides in-depth patient consultations to determine if you can achieve your desired results with an upper or lower eyelid lift. Typically, he recommends the procedure for patients with the following traits:
- Excessively wrinkled skin at the lower and upper eyelids
- Puffy, under eye bags making them look old and tired
- Droopy upper eyelids from excess skin fat or skin
- Obstructed vision due to drooping upper eyelids
Certain patients may not be suitable candidates for eyelid surgery alone. In these cases, Dr. Anous can discuss alternative ways, some surgical and others non-surgical, to create a similar lifting effect.
Your Eyelid Surgery with Dr. Anous
Blepharoplasty is an outpatient procedure completed under local anesthesia with sedation or a general anesthetic. Dr. Anous will start with the upper eyelids, then move to the lower (if necessary) making incisions along the natural creases and contours to ensure your results look as natural as possible. He carefully and conservatively removes excess skin and fat. Incisions are then closed with fine sutures.
Dr. Anous tailors the procedure to correct the patient’s unique concerns. These may include removing or repositioning fat, skin, and muscle, or skin only, or a combination of any of these concerns. Dr. Anous will lift and tighten lower eyelids to ensure the lid is well positioned and attractive. Patients with fatty tissue but no excess skin might be candidates for transconjunctival eyelid surgery.
While most blepharoplasty surgery is focused solely on the eyes, advanced surgical methods include treating the mid-face (cheeks) during the corrective process. This technique adds support to the lower lids, repositioning the displaced cheek structures and comprehensively eliminating circles, bags, and wrinkles.
Advanced techniques may also include Botox® to resolve wrinkles and lines about the eyes. Your procedures will last one to two hours, on average, unless additional facial rejuvenation treatments are scheduled.
Eyelid Surgery Recovery
Any discomfort should be mild and easily managed with pain medication. Intermittent ice packs will help with pain and swelling for the first day or two. Sleeping with your head above your heart will keep bruising and swelling to a minimum. You should not strain, lift, or bend for the first week. Expect eye dryness for a couple of weeks, which you can manage by artificial tears or a prescribed ophthalmic ointment.
Your sutures will be removed within the first week, allowing for makeup. Swelling and bruising are unpredictable from patient to patient. You should expect minor bruising for at least a week. Also, expect minor asymmetry as the speed of recovery may not be the same for each eye.
Unless Dr. Anous instructs otherwise, you should be able to return to work after one week. Patients tell us recovery is very tolerable with little discomfort. You may employ light massages to relax tight lids. After six weeks you should enjoy natural, amazing results to your eyelids and eye appearance.
There may be some discomfort after surgery for the first few days. Dr. Anous will prescribe pain medication to help you through this period.
Blepharoplasty has a proven track record of several decades and offers a safe procedure with risks very rare. However, it is surgery which comes with potential complications including dry eyes, infection, and bleeding.
