4 Reconstruction Options after Removing Breast Implants

Breast augmentation is one of the more popular cosmetic procedures that surgeons perform in the United States and worldwide. It is especially a highly sought-after operation in the Southern California area, and here in LA. With so many women having this cosmetic improvement done year-in and year-out, it stands to reason there will be cases that require the removal of breast implants. The most common justification is that women are ready for a change. Whether the patient is not happy with the results of her breast surgery or she is entering a new stage in her life where they don’t fit her lifestyle, women have options after removing their implants. These choices include the following.

Implant Swap

Sometimes, a woman is not happy with the size or shape of her breasts after breast enhancement. Whether the breasts are too large, too small, or not the right contour, these patients want to exchange them for a more suitable pair. Or perhaps the implants have suffered damage or a rupture and need removal and replacement for the patient’s safety. Whatever the reason, Beverly Hills plastic surgeon Dr. Maher Anous can help.

First, Dr. Anous will perform what is known as an explant to remove the existing breast implants. Then, he will insert new implants into the capsules of fibrous scar tissue, which developed around her previous implants. The procedure will take careful consideration and planning but is well worth the results.

Fat Transfer

It stands to reason that removing breast implants leaves a void in the chest area. If the patient does not want to swap out these implants with others, she can choose to fill that void with a fat transfer instead.

A fat transfer takes excess fat from a donor site on the patient’s body, typically the thighs or abdomen. Then, this fat gets purified in a special centrifuge and inserted into the breast area to replace volume and create a natural appeal.

Breast Reduction

A breast reduction is another common choice for women who lead a more active lifestyle or want to rid themselves of the additional weight of their existing implants. This procedure can lessen the volume, weight, and projection of the chest area for cosmetic concerns as well as lifestyle enhancements.

Breast Lift

Some of our patients want to have their implants removed with no replacement. Women who are tired of carrying around implants in their body or reach an age when the breast implants don’t have the same allure for this different stage of their life often choose to remove their implants without replacement. A breast lift may be necessary to attain a pleasing position for a better elevation of the breast and nipple and remove any excess skin that remains after the implants are gone.
