A Facelift (Rhytidectomy) is a surgical procedure designed to reposition displaced soft tissues of the face and neck back in their original position. During the aging process and under the influence of gravity, the skin, underlying fatty tissue and muscles are affected equally.
Older techniques dealt only with the skin and demanded excessive tension. The modern era of facelifting started in the early 70's and steadily progressed. The operation is no longer only "skin deep" but involves the deeper layers while the skin is only minimally stretched at the end of the surgery. Nowadays results are more natural and last far longer.
Reasons for Considering a Facelift:
-
Sagging skin, muscles, and fat in the face and neck.
-
Excess skin and fat on the neck.
-
Sagging jaw line.
-
Crease lines along the nose, mouth, and chin.
Facelift: The Procedure
The standard procedure for a facelift commonly involves making small incisions just inside the hairline, following the contour in front of the ear, and continuing under the earlobe to the backside of the ear and to the lower scalp. Deeper structures are gently repositioned in their normal (youthful) place and the skin is gently "re-draped" over them. If the neck line requires attention (and it usually does), it is taken care off through the same incisions.
Face and neck lifting in my hands is usually under three and a half hours long. If additional maneuvers are added (forehead and brow lift; blepharoplasty), the operation may last longer but should generally be kept under six hours.
Facelift: The Recovery Process
Once ther surgery has ended and while the patient is still on the operating table, the hair is shampooed. No dressings are applied but a facial garment is worn as a supportive measure. The patient is asked to shower and shampoo twice per day starting on the morning following surgery. Resuming normal quiet activities (including outdoor ones) is encouraged immediately. The stitches are normally removed within a week. Patients sometimes report some minor pain associated with surgery. Any discomfort can be treated effectively with oral medication. While complications are rare, you can minimize potential problems by carefully following the directions given after the procedure.
